Half-term holiday
A short school holiday or recess in the middle of a school term. In the text, the Stark family uses this break to plan a family trip to a desert, valley, and lake.
Sightseeing tour
A tour designed for visiting and viewing places of interest, such as historical monuments, towers, and bridges. Mr Stark plans to book one to see towers and museums.
Amusement park
A commercial park featuring various recreational attractions, rides, and games. Susan expresses her desire to visit one to ride the fastest roller coaster.
Sand dune
A mount, hill, or ridge of sand piled up by the wind, commonly found in deserts or near beaches. In Lençóis Maranhenses, rainwater fills these dunes to create lakes.
Coral reef
An underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest of these systems on Earth and is home to diverse marine life.
Snorkelling
The practice of swimming on or through the water while equipped with a diving mask and a shaped breathing tube called a snorkel. It is a popular activity at the Great Barrier Reef.
Scuba diving
The sport or activity of swimming underwater using a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. Tourists do this to explore the crystal-clear waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

Postcard
A card for sending a message by post without an envelope, typically having a photograph or other illustration on one side. Arnold sends these to share his travel updates.
Bucket list
A number of achievements or experiences a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. Arnold describes visiting the Trevi Fountain as a bucket list item.
Northern Lights
A natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions. Arnold travels to Finland during the winter to watch this magical phenomenon.
Valley
A low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it. The Stark family plans to visit one next to the desert to watch the sunrise.
Canyon
A deep gorge, typically one with a river flowing through it, as exemplified by the Grand Canyon in Arizona, which has the Colorado River flowing through its center.
Climate
The long-term pattern of weather conditions in a particular region. The unit emphasizes how climate affects travel plans, such as packing sunscreen for deserts.
Continent
Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land. Mr Stark plans to take the family to visit an amazing continent along with their cousins.

Cosy hotel
A lodging establishment that is warm, comfortable, and pleasant. The Stark family plans to stay in one near the ocean to relax and listen to the waves.
National park
A scenic or historically important area of countryside protected by the federal government for the enjoyment of the general public or the preservation of wildlife.
Jolly
A slang or informal term used to describe a lively, pleasant trip or festive excursion. Jack uses it when saying, 'We are going on a jolly to the seaside!'
Breather
A brief pause for rest, exercise, or fresh air. Janet mentions that they all need to take a breather during the summer holiday after a tiring school term.
Stroll
A short, leisurely walk taken for exercise or pleasure. Janet plans to take a stroll around the city of Paris during her summer holiday.
Museum of Ice
A unique exhibition building made entirely of real ice. Arnold plans to visit one during his winter holiday in Finland.
Fountain
An ornamental structure in a pool or lake from which one or more jets of water are pumped into the air. Arnold visits the Trevi Fountain in Italy to toss a coin.

London Eye

The protective outer layer created by an animal that lives in the sea. Justin and Susan plan to collect these together on the beach.
